Summer Ukulele Classes

Two Trees Ukulele Jam: For nine weeks, on Wednesday afternoons at 3-4pm in the months of June and July I’ll be leading a new ukulele class for youth ages 10 and up on the lawn in front of my home studio (856 N 350 W in American Fork). The cost of the class is $40 for all nine weeks (less than $5 a week). I chose Wednesdays as they are away from weekend trips and all the major summer holidays this year.

This practical class will focus on learning a bunch of songs (2-3 new songs a week) along with strum patterns and fingerpicking to accompany them. Music will be provided (you’ll need your own ukulele and tuner).  By the end of the summer, youth participating in the class will have at least 18 new songs that they can sing and strum in their repertoire.

To join the class, please RSVP to ryan@ukuleleplay.com with the subject ‘Two Trees Ukulele Jam.’ Please list the names and ages of youth participating in the class. Payment can be brought to the first session. This class will need at least 8 students to carry.

This is a great way to retain and build on the skills kids have been working on in Ukulele Youth Choir this year. Also open to new players.

Sheet Music, Etc.

A number of children were asking me about sheet music for one piece or another today. Just as a reminder, here is where our current repertoire can be downloaded and printed: http://afcc.choirworks.com/current-repertoire/

Also, I brought three new songs for those in Ukulele Youth Choir a few weeks ago. Some of them must not have been there that day. I’ve added those songs to the above page.

Just in case anyone is interested, a new session of my group ukulele class is starting this Wednesday for ages 10-Adult. Details at http://ukuleleplay.com/power-up-ukulele-classes-summer-camps-utah-uke-fest/

Today was a great rehearsal; looking forward to our Tulip Festival performance on May 7th and our concert on May 23rd.

American Fork Children’s Choir

Under the current directorship of M. Ryan Taylor, the choir has performed consistently in the community of American Fork. Recent performance highlights include participation in the 100th Anniversary Celebration of the Alpine Tabernacle, the Steel Days Parade and the annual Christmas in the Rotunda concert at American Fork library. This season the choir is preparing to join choirs from around the country to take place in the international Sing’n’Joy choral festival hosted by Interkultur in Provo, UT.

Hundreds of children and adults have benefited from the choir’s programs during Taylor’s tenure. Currently the choir has five areas of educational focus.

  • Concert Choir: This choir serves the advanced singers of our children’s choir, learning and performing rounds and two-part choral literature. Tuition Free.
  • Chimes & Voices: This is the AFCC training choir, focusing on in-tune singing and good vocal production. New in 2016: The choir has begun working with a two-octave set of hand chimes; already this has greatly increased choir focus and retention. Tuition Free.
  • Ukulele Youth Choir: This group, introduced in 2015, currently serves over 25 children, teaching the basics of good singing and ukulele playing. Tuition Free.
  • Power Up Ukulele: This self-sustaining group class teaches children, teens, adults and seniors beginning through intermediate ukulele playing techniques.
  • UFO HUM: This self-sustaining adult ukulele performance ensemble serves intermediate to advanced ukulele players, performing with and often accompanying the children’s choirs. UFO HUM has also performed at many of the neighboring city celebrations, including Orem Summerfest, Pony Express Days, and Highland Fling Days. The members of this group also greatly help with the organization and execution of the Annual Utah Uke Fest held in American Fork, now in its fifth year.

Additional choir highlights include world premieres of new works The Sand and the Sea as well as Choirs and Angels Sing. The choir has also created a number of music videos, including three animated videos as part of last summer’s choir camp. View videos of the choir at http://bit.ly/afccvids
